STUDENTS and staff at Prudhoe High School showed their continued support for Tibet by welcoming a special guest to the school.
Chenga Tsering was representing Empowering the Vision, a youth project which offers support for young people exiled from the country.
During his visit, he met pupils from years eight to 11, and enjoyed a student-produced Powerpoint presentation detailing Tibet’s history, culture and current situation.
Mr Tsering also encouraged the students to participate in a range of activities he would usually lead with schoolchildren in Dehli, India.
Prudhoe High School has had links with Tibet for many years, reinforced in 2005 when head of drama Yvonne Clark hosted the first UK visit of a school in Mussoorie run by the Tibetan Homes Foundation (THF), which offers a “home from home” for Tibetan children.
Since then, the schools have kept in touch, exchanging artwork, letters and emails and organising fund-raising and film-making projects.
The recent visit was organised by Empowering the Vision’s founding charity Tibet Relief Fund, to which the school presented a cheque for £1,000.
Representative Katie Mallin said: “It really was wonderful to visit Prudhoe High School and see first hand the dedication and hard work undertaken by students and staff at the school in their support of Tibet
“As a fund-raiser for the Tibet Relief Fund, it was wonderful to talk to the students about their various dynamic methods in raising funds for the school in India, and we were overwhelmed to be presented with the cheque – testament to their incredible efforts.”
Mr Tsering said: “I found it very inspiring to see how the students are raising funds for Tibetan Homes Foundation students – especially as I was myself a student at THF.
“Tibetan Buddhism talks about compassion, and what we have seen here is real compassion in action.”
