Dawa Choezom is a chartered accountant (CA), currently working in KPMG (one of the top four accounting firms) as an Assistant Manager in Statutory Audit Department. She is presently based in Chennai.
“Choosing Chattered Accountancy was a result of sheer curiosity and then becoming Chattered Accountant was pure hard work and perseverance. If you sincerely pursue something, everything falls into places, albeit with everybody’s blessings”, said Dawa Choezom
Dawa was born and brought up in Bylakuppe (Karnataka, India), schooled from TCV Bylakuppe. She graduated with a Bachelors degree in commerce from Madras Christian College, Chennai. After her graduation, she pursued Chartered Accountancy (CA) from Institute of Chartered Accountants of India (ICAI) where she received her prestigious CA qualification in November 2011. This she reckons was only possible after six years of hard work and perseverance.
“As a student and during the Articleship (mandatory CA internship), my classes for CA were to be attended along with the articleship. There would be days when classes would start at 6.30 am, office (internship) at 9.30 am, then evening classes at 6 pm again, getting back home only around 9 pm. My daily mode of commute to article office and classes were buses, since then that was what I could afford. It was exhausting but I willed to pursue it and thus persevered”.
She finished her articleship at a smaller firm, making it possible for her to grow and learn more with every assignment. The first-hand experience of auditing was exhilarating for her and she got to practically apply what was learned in books, more and more. In those three years of articleship, her interest for audit grew further and she decided to take up Audit for good.
Dawa Choezom believes that proper guidance and awareness helps make better and informed choice when it comes to pursuing a career. As such, with her current experience and position, she has been involved in providing career guidance and counselling to Tibetan Students during her visit to Tibetan schools and Colleges. She helps young CA aspirants know about the scope, challenges and opportunities in the field and how they could pursue the same with some hardwork and commitment.
Reflecting on her future plans, she observes, “My initial dream was to open my own audit firm, but it keeps taking a back seat. For now, I want to avail the opportunities to the most and grow in my understanding and learning all that I can while working at a big firm. I do hope to work in the CTA for a few years or volunteer for sometime in future if such an opportunity comes at the right time. However, there are many options and plans for now, and I hope to fulfill them in due time”.
