I was born and raised in Tashi Palkhiel Settlement, Pokhara, Nepal and completed my primary and secondary education from Herman Gmeiner School and Namgyal higher secondary school respectively. After completing my school, I went to Bangalore to pursue my studies in Journalism. Soon after my graduation, I began looking out for opportunities to intern in a media agency, public relation or other communication houses for exposure as well as to enhance my skills and broaden my knowledge. During this time, as luck would have it, I came across a Facebook post by Empowering the Vision Project regarding the fellowship offered to young graduates. This Fellowship supports career goal of young Tibetans by providing financial support so as to pursue an internship and short term course, both being three months-six months in their areas of study and career prospect. I thought it was a great opportunity for freshers like me to explore and apply for. As such, I immediately got in touch with the ENVISION office and applied for the fellowship programme. After a telephonic interview by ENVISION’s director I was shortlisted for the fellowship. Not only did Empowering the Vision Project funded my internship, Envisions director Youdon Aukatsang, after hearing my interest and desire, help me further in getting the internship at an Event Management Company- Pine Tree Picture Pvt.Ltd.-Mumbai.
I was fortunate to have met Pasang Bhuti, another ENVISION fellowship recipient who was to begin her six months internship and training in Mumbai at ADAPT(Able Disabled All People Together). It was thoughtful of ENVISION to ensure we both stay together at ADAPT campus accommodation knowing well that getting place to stay in Mumbai that is safe and economical will be difficult for me. Pasang Bhuti and I have each others back in the big and unfamiliar city of Mumbai, which was reassuring for ENVISION and us too.
My internship started on 5th October in Pine Tree Picture Pvt.Ltd.-a complete media house handling event management, film production and online marketing. Initially, I was assigned to Kashish project. This project was about creating clients profile by gathering necessary information. My initial days was quite challenging as I took time to open up and adapt to the new place. As they say “time and good friend are two things that become more valuable the older you get.” Same was a case for me, with time and a friend Pasang Bhuti (my roommate in hostel) things changed for the better. A month later, my first outdoor event happened with IESS (India Engineering Sourcing Show)-largest exhibition for engineering industry where buyer and seller from all around the world came to showcase the latest technology. Since it was my first event, I was little lost and not confident about the task assigned and felt pressurized as well. This event however was a lesson, and taught me how to handle pressure with ease under most difficult situations and how to be alert and more engaging.
My second event was “Yumm Fest”food festival, a close collaboration between Pine Tree Picture Pvt.Ltd. and Poona Hoteliers Association. The festival was participated by top 25 hotels of Pune with a live performance by well-known bands and celebrity appearances as well. Having experienced and learned few things in the previous events, I become more confident, relaxed and as such was involved more, and engaged in all activities with the seniors this time. I really enjoyed out there and engaged unlike the previous event. Before the internship, there were few things i felt, i would need to work on before getting into a job full time. I feel I have achieved that to a good extent with the internship at Pine Tree Ltd. I believe I am more confident now, my communication skills have improved and I feel enthusiastic and positive to accept challenges now on. My internship not only provided me with professional skills, but also helped me gain personal experiences and soft skills. I am grateful to Empowering the Vision Projects (ENVISION) team for their unflinching support & their guidance provided to me the past so many months and even now when I call them for any assistance. Honestly, it has made a huge difference to me and helped give a wonderful start to my career. I am proud to be a recipient of ENVISION fellowship 2015 and therefore encourage young Tibetan everywhere, who wished to explore and excel in their respective area of interest to grab this opportunity. I wish ENVISION the best for their programmes and hope they will continue to guide and support young Tibetans on the threshold of life’s most crucial crossroads of career and jobs.
