The creative field in India is a growing industry but like most things here, it suffers from extremely high levels of competition. After completing my school education at TCV, I made a life-changing decision to pursue art as a career which till then was a hobby. I ended up completing a BFA – Bachelors in Fine Art – at the College of Art (University of Delhi) specializing in Applied Art but still lacked direction on how to enter the creative professional industry. During my undergraduate study, I did most of my schoolwork as well as weekly assignments manually. Looking back, I wish we were taught more on the digital medium and had given more personal focus on working with digital formats and digital modes of creating art. This would have definitely made my work more viable, efficient and suitable for professional work. After all, digital medium requires minimal resources and has the scope to create a wide variety of art works. All you need is a computer and training in the relevant software. Hence, at this juncture, I required a training programme which not only equipped me with these skills but also gave me exposure to the field.
This was made possible by Empowering the Vision 2017 Fellowship and currently, I am in the third month of my Advanced Certification Course in Graphic Design at TGC Animation & Multimedia (South Extension Part 1, New Delhi). Here, there were two ways to take this course, one is a three-month fast track course and the other is a six-month course which I am currently pursuing.
In the first month, we were taught Adobe Illustrator, a powerful graphics editor necessary for creating digital artworks from scratch and used as an industry standard. From there, we have now moved on to learning Adobe Photoshop which is the quintessential tool for editing images. Hence, this course has a good overview and training modules pertaining to industry standard software tools and digital publishing. This along with my consistent self-training and hard work will go a long way in equipping myself with the skills necessary to gain a foothold in the competitive industry.
I consider myself lucky for having this privilege to enrich my professional as well as artist learning. While pursuing my Bachelors in Fine Art from Delhi School of Art, my focus was more on enhancing my natural inclination to drawing, and not much in digital/graphics form. But now I believe that an overall exposure in all these forms is necessary for one’s professional growth. I am therefore fortunate to get this opportunity of ENVISION Fellowship to pursue Graphics Design course, as an educational program of this nature was necessary for me to advance my future career in advertising and design. So I would like to thank Envision for believing in my potential and giving me this opportunity.
