Empowering the Vision Project organised a one-day Employability Skills workshop for Tibetan youth residing in Gangtok, Sikkim on September 10 at Hotel Tibet. The workshop aimed at helping young Tibetans identify and understand the importance of employability skills and work on improving it. ENVISION Director, Youdon Aukatsang, facilitated the workshop with twenty youths participating.
Most of the participants were members of Wings of Tibet, a Tibetan youth network based in Gangtok. Participants were largely students with a few young professionals. Participants comprised of 12 female and 8 male participants. There were atleast three participants who were looking for employment opportunities while others wanted exposure to possible career paths based on their skills and general aptitude for those careers/jobs.
The morning half of the day was dedicated to discovering the Self and the potential careers related to personality types. The workshop was participatory with activities, discussions and use of audio-visuals. Ample opportunity was given to reflect and articulate values, interest and personal skills. Most participants were able to identify at least three career choices based on their interest and personal skills. Participants were given materials to come up with and an action plan to work on their career path.
Communication Skills and interview preparation was the focus of the afternoon session. Participants also took pre and post evaluation of their awareness on interview preparation. They were familiarized with the ins and outs of the interviewing process. Some quality time was spent on drafting and building ones’ resume.
Additionally, participants were exposed to the various opportunities made available by ENVISION- job assistance, internships and fellowships.
In the feedback session at the end of the workshop, almost all participants expressed that they had never been part of a career workshop and how such a workshop would help them make better choices when choosing a career or looking for a job.
