My name is Ugyen Samten and I passed out from Tibetan Children’s Village School, Suja. Pursuing a career in photography has always been my dream ever since I was in school. However, our educational system was such that there is no separate stream for liberal arts but one has to choose between Science, Humanities and Commerce. I am grateful to my school for providing me with the proper foundation and basic knowledge of life. Yet I was never happy with the ‘learn, memorize and produce’ education system at school. I wanted to spread my wings as far and wide as possible to a field of interest; i.e photography. After graduating from class XII, I chose to volunteer at Stories of Tibetan, an online digital forum set up by a Tibetan to tell stories of Tibetan refugees across India through social media platforms such as Youtube, FaceBook and Instagram. I was delighted to have contributed content as well as postcards created through my digital knowledge. However, I realised that I have more potentials to contribute should I learn more about photography formally through an institute as all I know hitherto, is purely out of self-learning. It is then, I researched for a good institute for photography and I came across a short-term course at Delhi College of Photography. The course wouldn’t have possible without the acceptance of my fellowship application by Empowering the Vision Project (ENVISION) for which, I am grateful. The course is of four and a half months beginning from October 5th. In the first two months, we were taught about the basics of photography such as history, meaning, types of camera, elements, shutter, aperture, ISO, Features, lighting, lens types, Rule and Spacing, Smoke & light photography etc. Apart from classroom teachings, we were taken on field trips to outdoor classes, studios and night shoots. I look forward to consuming more knowledge about photography in the coming months.
